A Trip to Zhaoqing

Last weekend Matt and I went to Zhaoqing. Basically, we wanted a cheap vacation out from Hong Kong. We didn't really have the money to fly anywhere, but it was a three day weekend and we knew we wanted to get out! Hong Kong is great but it can be very tiring and claustrophobic. Especially if you live in Central like we do, it can get sort of stifling to be surrounded by sky scrapers all of the time. We got out our Lonely Planet and picked a spot that we could get to by ferry that seemed remotely interesting. Zhaoqing is only a 4 hour ferry ride away and is said to be one of the most scenic spots in the Guangdong Province, with scenery like Guilin only not as good. So, Zhaoqing it was!

On the ferry we were surprised to see Matt's boss there with his church group going to deliver wheelchairs to a school in China. Hmmm...what a small world. I don't know when the church group managed to fit in the wheel chair delivery though because we kept seeing them all over town.

We didn't have a reservation for a hotel, we were just winging it, and it was so exhilarating! That weekend and the whole next week is a holiday for the Chinese, so a lot of the hotels were fully booked. We found one right near the lake called the Shiu Hing Hotel, and it was quite nice and relatively cheap. The best part about the hotel was the WONDERFUL dim sum restaurant. It was glorious! Carts went around with tons of yummy and delicious food, and there was someone making noodles in the corner by hand. We were a novelty there and so we were treated very nicely. The first time we went there, we made the mistake of getting all dessert items first, then we were too full for the other things...oh well, live and learn!
